Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them
in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.
And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

WELCOME TO THE DIOCESE

A Community of Faith in the Blue Mountains

Since 1955, the Diocese of Ootacamund has carried the Gospel across the Nilgiris and into the plains of Erode — through parishes, schools, hospitals and homes that reach Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and English-speaking communities alike.

Rooted in the hills where the Western and Eastern Ghats meet, the diocese has grown from a single mission chapel into a communion of faith spanning three states — guided in prayer, strengthened in charity, and united in service to the people of God.

Today, the Diocese of Ootacamund continues that mission through its parishes, its schools and colleges, its hospitals and social service institutions, and the many religious congregations who call the Nilgiris home.

Most of the diocese’s faithful are farmers and daily-wage workers, living alongside five distinct tribal communities — the Badaga, Kurumba, Thoduva, Pania and Urali — who call these hills and forests home. It is a diocese shaped as much by tea gardens and mist-covered slopes as by the quiet faith of the families who till them.

The diocese of Ootacamund came into being by the Apostolic Constitution Nunciature in Psalm of Pope Pius XII, which was promulgated on 3rd July, 1955.
The diocese of Ootacamund, which from its inception is steadily marching towards its goal of building the people of God in faith, hope and charity.
